Description: Front seam fixed bale helmet with name and initials "AZ". Name written on sweatband is difficult to read. I see what's probably Arthur Zie..... I really examined this and found on the other side of the sweatband a partial number remaining in ink and some cracking "...08-81" which is certainly a Navy number. Paired with the Art* Ziet* the Navy musters yielded Arthur W. Ziethen, 855-08-81. That makes the surname much clearer and you can also make out "MM1c" after it. He was eventually promoted to CMM. Ziethen went through a couple Navy Yards and CB training before joining the USS Silenus for commissioning. He remained on the ship for the rest of the war (servicing PT boats) in the Pacific. Westinghouse liner with the early folded over webbing for the nape band. All OD hardware except the chinstrap which is blackened brass. The photos do not capture the writing that remains on the leather - some is legible only by cracking which was formed over the pen.
