Description: A very nice example of a World War One 'Yser Medal' as issued to: Belgian Troops (& British & French Forces in support) On October 1918, just 3 weeks before the end of The Great War, the Belgian army instituted the Yser Medal to commemorate the action of the Belgian Army that had stood along the Yser river in north Belgium, facing the full might of the German army between October 17 and 31, 1914. Despite being outnumbered by a better trained & equipped army, the Belgian soldiers held their ground, sustaining some 60,000 casualties during the bloody Fighting that ensued… The award of the Yser Medal was to soldiers that had fought in this early action of the war and could also be presented posthumously and although given to Belgian soldiers who fought in the action, it was not exclusive to them, and French & British troops who also served on the Yser during the qualification time were also eligible for the Medal. Known as the Médaille de l’Yser in French, it measures some 1.5" in diameter and with a striking black & orange ribbon, it was cast in bronze with a very dull appearance.. With the Belgian Army being just 100,000 strong in total a and only given to those taking part if the fighting on the Yser in October 1914, this is one of the more quirky, less common Great War's Allied medals. Complete with its original water-marked ribbon, this is very attractive Great War medal in good condition..! Thanks for looking..!
