Description: In 2003, I made a "pilgrimage" to Normandy, France, to see where my father fought during WW II. He was not at the landing site on June 6. He was with a replacement unit that arrived later in June, 1944. I stayed in a very small B & B in a village adjacent to the D-Day battlefields. One evening, over a glass of wine while explaining to the elderly proprietress that my father was landed AFTER the initial fighting (about week later), she showed me some artifacts she had collected around the time of the battles. She was 16 years old at the time and, after the fighting moved inland, she walked around the area, collecting artifacts, including parts of torn parachutes, identifying them later. I expressed interest and afterward, returning home, I sent her one of my father's WW II medals to add to her collection of wartime memorabilia. Several weeks later, I received this envelope and inside were strips of dyed nylon from her collection of parachute fragments. I put the items into a shadow box and it has been hanging on my wall for the past 20+ years. Note that the envelope was commemorating the "DEBARQUEMENT", or disembarkation. The French celebrate the event as a Liberation, rather than an invasion. The postmark on the envelope is not shown clearly in the scan but it is from Ste. Marie Du Mont, France, her village, and shown on the printed cachet map with a penned "X", just to the left of Utah Beach. The postmark also says the name of the village as well as, "Utah Beach."The strips of parachute are identified by type of drop: Personnel, Munitions, Artillery and Food. The white strips are from the backup (reserve) chutes. This is, indeed, a very unusual artifact of WW II.WYSISYG. The lot includes the entire shadow box, which measures 8" x 10" x 7/8." Shipping weight, including lots of padding so the glass remains intact, is over 2 lb. Shipping will be by Priority Mail within the USA.
