Description: The New Milford Historical Society illustration by Woldemar Neufeld, 1977. Limited print run, printed with permission of Laurence Neufeld as a fundraiser for the Knapp House Restoration. All proceeds go to the restoration. Woldemar Neufeld was born in Waldheim, Ukraine, on November 10, 1909. He fled with his family to Canada in 1924, as World War I raged in his once-safe homeland. His drawing and penmanship abilities were noted at a young age, and he studied in Canada and Cleveland, Ohio. In 1945, he and his wife of 6 years, moved to New York City, where Woldemar established himself as an East River artist. He confirmed his growing reputation with several one-man shows, and taught painting to serious students. All four of Woldemar and Peggy's children were born in the 1940s, and in 1946, Woldemar started renting a studio space across from Alexander Calder's studio in Roxbury, CT. Having fallen in love with Litchfield County, the family purchased a neglected farm on New Preston Hill in 1949 and lived there until 1988, when the moved to the town of New Milford. His painting continued for many more years. He passed away in November, 2002 at the age of 93. Your purchase will help support the New Milford Historical Society's Permanent Collection. We are a private, non-profit 501C3 organization.
