Description: What People Live By/What Men Live By. 1886 First Edition by Leo Tolstoy Hardcover Condition: Good+ First Edition Octavo 83 pages Original cobalt blue cloth cover with illustrated black and white paste-on picture, gilt lettering on front and spine. Illustrated title page and three more b&w illustrations scattered throughout. Translated from the Russian by Mrs Aline Delano, a woman. Subsequent translators used the gendered terminology and called the book by it's more widely-known title, "What Men Live By." Other idiosyncrasies include spelling the author's name, "Tolstoi." Book is in good to very good condition. Has moderately bumped corners, and a little fraying to the bottom of the spine (on the front). Small area of soiling on FFEP and front end paper Book also has 4 smudged/soiled pages, which is the exception, as most pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is tight and square, cover is gorgeous in hue with shiny gilding. A beautiful book!!
