Description: This darling pair are a bit of a mystery to me. Raggedy Ann dolls were introduced in 1918, her brother, Andy in 1920. Their creator, Johnny Gruelle, licensed the production of the dolls to the company P F Volland. The P F Volland dolls have tags, these do not have any tags. There is a long history of non licensed doll production and obviously, any one with sewing talent could produce these. I believe this pair were made from some sort of a printed pattern. Near the hairline and beneath the eyes are small printed dots indicating where cuts to the fabric were to be made or where hair and eye placement was to be. I suspect that these might have been produced from a doll making kit or, possibly, dolls that were made through a cottage industry. The appliquéd noses and embroidered features are not part of Gruelle’s design as the features on his patent are printed. There is no heart on either doll which was a signature of the P F Volland licensed dolls. What I do know for sure is that his pair are old and have honest signs of wear. There are water marks to the faces and clothes. Raggedy Ann’s hair is loose in one spot. The clothes are sun faded. I tried to take their clothes fully off but they are sewn to the doll in various spots. Please see my detailed photos as the best source of condition. No matter where they were produced, this pair has immense charm and were crafted with obvious love and skill! Please let me know if you have any questions.
