Description: This scarf belonged to my grandmother and then my mother. My grandmother was born in Scotland and she took my mother over to the U.K. in the 1950’s. It is a crepe scarf depicting London landmarks and including names of all the Commonwealth countries. The border is a very faint light blue. The color of the scarf is an off white.(the photo make it looks tad yellow) It is In good vintage condition. *Upon very close inspection I did notice a little area on the border that has what looks like 2 tiny holes, maybe where a pin was used when my grandmother wore it...not really sure. The last photo shows that area. A BIT OF HISTORY- The Festival of Britain was intended as a 'tonic for the nation', a spectacular cultural event to raise the spirits of a country still in the grasp of austerity and rationing, and undergoing severe social and economic reform. Held in the summer of 1951, it provided light-relief to 8.5 million people who visited the main Festival site on London's South Bank, and the events held in cities and towns across the country. Importantly, it also acted as a catalyst for a new design aesthetic, launching the career of noted British designers working in the fields of textiles, furniture and graphic design. Many of the designs originally produced for the Festival have been acquired for our collections. Measures approximately 27”x 27” and it has been gently washed and hung to dry.
