Vintage Plastic 1958 Eldon Cargo Ship No. 906 w/Cargo, Boom, Catalog and Box NM

Description: Eldon Plastic “Eldon Cargo Ship No. 906” with Cargo and Boom Crane in BoxEldon Plastics, Los Angeles, CA. Made in USA. Circa 1957-1959. Polyethylene plastic. Measures approx. 20 inches long.Eldon produced this cargo ship from 1957 to about 1959. It was sold in Sears, Montgomery Ward, Alden and a number of other stores. It featured opening cargo hatches, a working cargo crane, 2 lifeboats and 3 crates and 3 barrels as cargo. It rolled on the floor on 2 sets of wheels and also had a sealed hull, making it a pool or tub toy.This ship is missing 2 of the 3 barrels and one life boat. It includes all 3 boxes and 1 barrel for cargo. The mast with boom is in perfect condition, complete with string and hook. It inserts into a fitting in the hull. Both sets of cargo hold doors are complete and work properly. One lifeboat is included and 1 is missing. The Eldon label is still on top of the bridge. There is a broken head of a tab that holds the deck to the hull (common with these ships). The body of the tab is still attached, holding the deck. The head is included (in the bag that holds the cargo) and can be glued (see photos). The rest of the tabs (18 in all) are still attached and unbroken. Otherwise there are no warps, cracks or breaks. The plastic is still flexible. The colors are still bright. The name on the bow is “S. S. Eldon”.The box is fragile and missing both end panels. It shows shelf and storage wear. Both box ends and 3 of the 4 flaps are missing. The box is also missing sections at one end and dogging on the other. Three of 4 sides are complete but have stains and dirt (see photos). Also included is a long double-sided color Eldon catalog that shows a fantastic collection of now-much-sought-after Eldon toys, such as the B-58 Supersonic Bomber, Seagrave Firetrucks, Sherman Tank, Attack Transport and Cargo Plane. It is in good condition and was isuued in most 1958 toys.Polyethylene plastic was a miracle plastic of the 1950s and ‘60s, advertised as “Unbreakable” (a word Eldon used a lot) but remember, plastic production was still in its infancy, a byproduct of WWII research with many different formulas and processes. With age, Poly plastic can change and become brittle, breaking easily. Some collectors claim that long term storage , excess heat and cold and many other factors are to blame. A designer from a plastics company once told me that quality control may be to blame and perhaps the brittle items are just from a “bad batch”. Whatever the cause, older pieces commonly crack or break. This ship is still flexible with no such problems.
