This is a very rare, NIB, vintage kit made by Sterling Models, one of the premier scale models of the 1980-90’s era. This kit is one the best scale kits of the fabulous PT-17 biplane ever made by anyone. The PT-17 was used as a primary trainer for most WWII American pilots who would later go one to make their mark in history flying bombers and fighters for the Allies in both the European and Pacific theaters. Nearly all of them started in the open cockpit of the Stearman PT-17. Prior to the war, the Stearman made its' mark as a barnstorming aircraft, thrilling crowds all over the US. This large scale kit features an exact scale outline with no deviation whatsoever. The airfoil, dihedral, and rib spacing on both the main wings and tail surfaces are true to scale, as is the fuselage outline and construction. The plastic dummy Continental engine is also highly detailed with scale features. The included US Army decals are also scale. The kit is comprised of high quality balsa and hardwood die-cut parts, accurately and cleanly cut. Also included are hard maple spars, formed leading and trailing edges for the wings and tail surfaces, formed wire cabane struts and landing gear, a spun aluminum cowl, scale decals, and so on. The kit includes full size plans and instructions. The wings will span 64 ½”, the fuselage is 50” long. Originally designed for a .56 to .65 2-cyclenitro engine, it is an ideal model for a small gas engine, or for a creative builder, a great electric conversion.
