So here is some basic information that can be found online… Tips for identifying authentic puka shells · A smooth lens or disk shaped shell. One side will be concave the other convex. · They are rarely uniform in shape. Shells will usually have differences in shape and size. · Are they smooth to the touch. · There should be a ridge on the concave side spiraling down into the hole Puka shells are naturally occurring bead-like shells found on the beaches of Hawaii or other places. Each bead is the beach-worn apex of a cone snail. Such shells are often strung as necklaces, known as puka shell necklaces. Puka is the Hawaiian word for "hole" and refers to the naturally occurring hole in the middle of these rounded and worn shell fragments. As genuine puka shells became scarce due to demand many imitations began to appear which were often made of shell chips and disks from other places in the world. These are in a completely different class as they lack luster, quality, and the cultural significance of a real Hawaiian shell necklace.
