Description: RARE VINTAGE GREEK BYZANTINE ICON - "THEOTOKOS" Mother of God950 SILVER SETTING - Highest Quality - 6.5" Tall x 5" WideEXCELLENT vintage condition - No dents or damage noted to the silver oklad - There is a slight wrinkle in the canvas of the portrait which is only apparent at a certain angle of light - see specific photos of Madonna's face - Not objectionable & very difficult to see unless angled just right.Overlay setting is marked "950 Silver" - (finer purity than .925 sterling silver) - 950 silver purity is also noted on the certificate on the back.The hand-applied intricate relief / repousse' setting adds wonderful depth & dimension to the piece.The portrait of the Madonna is a copy of an original Byzantine portrait - the 950 silver oklad setting is hand chiseled by skilled Greek artisans specializing in chasing engraving & repousse'.Greek letters "MP" & "OY" short for "MHTHP OEOY" placed at the left & right of the head of the Virgin Mary are transliterated "Meter Theou" or "Mother of God". The "O" is the Greek letter "Theta". When you see two letters and a small squiggle over them, it means that the word has been abbreviated, and you are seeing the first and last letters of the word. Hanging loop is attached to the back of the black wood composite mounting board frame - hanging loop lays flat for easel display.The certificate label on the back is translated into several languages as these types of Icons are collected the world-over.Approx measurements : 6.5" Tall x 5" Wide x 3/4" Depth.(Photo note: Icon of Madonna & Child as seen in the last photo is at a separate listing).
