VF condition; excellent bronze patina The US Mint and Krider, Philadelphia producted 12,000 official Centennial Award Medallions to be awarded to exhibitors at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition of 1876 ("America's First Worlds Fair"). Obverse: In the center, a seated female figure representing the United States holds a crown, her left hand resting on a shield with an eagle. Symbols of art and industry are in the foreground: a sculpture, vase, a saw, a wheel. In the backgrfound is a working factory. Four oval panels with a total of 38 stars for the 38 U. S. states. At top, the oval depicts America seated with the Sun and an eagle. The right oval depicts Africa with palm trees and pyramids; the lower oval represents Asia with Indian and Chinese temples. The left oval represents Europe with Greek temples and Gothic spires. In tiny text on the left of the bottom horizontal line is engraved "H. Mitchell. SC." Reverse: About the margin: "INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION, PHILADELPHIA MDCCCLXXVI"; within a pair of laurel wreaths: "AWARDED BY UNITED STATES CENTENNIAL COMMISSION".
