uncommon & nice Defiance No 1244 wood plane 4 sized made by Stanley

Description: You are bidding on one Stanley Defiance Number 1244 wood plane as pictured.These were made from 1939 to 1955, and should not be confused with the 1800's Bailey Tool Company line of Defiance planes. Please see page 191 in Walter's book Stanley Tools for more information about this plane. Probably because they were so poorly marked, these tend to get overlooked. It is marked only "MADE IN USA" on the iron. The body is about 9-3/8" in length including the tail under the rear handle. The iron is about 1-15/16" in width, and is about 5-7/16" in length. The plane features the simple but clever frog that is cast into the body, and the short little lever cap. The adjusting nut is steel.The front knob and rear handle still have much of their reddish finish on them. Condition is generally very good, and the plane appears to have seen very little use. The bottom and sides still have the original machining marks, with some patina (color) on the sole and a couple of tiny hints of rust on the right side. The japanning is mostly intact but has dulled in places, and I don't see any evidence that it was repainted. The front knob and rear handle have some small scratches and show wear in the finish coating, but are otherwise intact. The iron and chip breaker are both reasonably clean, but have some bits of faint pitting. The lever cap is also bright and shiny, with some of the red infill still remaining in the oval, and the lower edge is intact other than some wear to the japanned finish that is on the lower edge. Except as noted, there are no cracks or chips or chunks missing from any of the castings, and everything operates properly. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay. If I ship to a state where eBay is required to collect sales tax, eBay will charge you the sales tax for your location. There is lots of information available from eBay that explains it in much more detail. The sales tax is completely out of my hands -- I don't have anything to do with deciding whether to charge tax, I don't have anything to do with deciding the tax rate, and I never see any of the funds that are collected, they go directly to eBay.SELLING OUTSIDE OF EBAY: Why would I risk my lengthy good standing with eBay to save you a couple of dollars? Especially when you ask on an email that is sent through the eBay email system? Please don't ask, the answer is no.INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: I no longer ship Internationally other than Canada.
