A former night club owner returns to postwar Japan to find his wife and fortune but finds things rather different from what he expected. His wife has divorced him in his absence and now has a child, Anya, whom Joe later discovers is his. He is blackmailed into smuggling Japanese war criminals back into Japan, but tells the authorities, in spite of Anya having been kidnapped. He succeeds in rescuing his child, but is killed in the process. Joe Barrett returns to Tokyo after World War II where he once owned a bar, Tokyo Joe's, and deserted his wife Trina.
