Description: This is an old letter from the Toch Brothers Company, which was located at 320 Fifth Avenue in New York City. This company was a manufacturer of "technical paints, varnishes, colors and enamels, acid, alkali & damp proof coatings, chemicals ". The company was founded in 1848. At the time of this letter, the company was co-owned by Henry M. Toch (1862-1933) and Maximillian Toch (1864-1946). There names are printed at the top of the letter. Maximillian Toch became controversial in art circles a few years after this letter was written, when he made public statements claiming that, based on his chemical analysis, the majority of paintings attributed to Rembrandt were not genuine. The letter is dated February 11, 1918, and is typed on a sheet of the company stationery. The letter is signed as though by the business itself ("Very truly yours, Toch Brothers"), rather than by an individual. The letter is addressed to engineer B. T. Wheeler of the Maine Central Railroad. Bertrand T. Wheeler (1863-1928) was the Chief Engineer of the Maine Central Railway. Wheeler also served for several years as Superintendent of Streets for the city of Boston. The letter is in very good condition, with some general wear. Shipping is FREE via USPS First Class Mail.
