Depew" Nelson Miles was an American soldier (1839–1925) who earned a niche in military history as the only man to serve as an officer in the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War. Though the nearly eighty-year-old Miles volunteered to serve during World War I, his offer was declined by Woodrow Wilson. We believe this was signed just after the return of the Rough Riders from the Spanish-American War, which would mean Roosevelt was almost certainly serving as Governor of New York at the time. An amazing assortment of names, especially so with Roosevelt, Morton and Miles. Toning at edges, file holes on left side, wear.
