Description: The Romantics: The Poetry of Lord Byron - Read by Tyrone Power CD Byromania was the term coined during the lifetime of the cultural phenomenon that was George Gordon, 6th Baron Byron (1788 – 1824). One of the first icons, fully image conscious, he captured public fascination and adoration but was as equally controversial. The Romantic that was the prototype of many a music or movie star that followed. His self imposed exile to escape his public and his early demise set the image of a tragic and heroic figure solidly in stone. Sometimes his flamboyance worked as a distraction to the brilliance, honesty, power and wit of his poetry, such as the selected excerpts included here. Don Juan is considered his masterpiece, then there are the autobiographical elements in Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage that speak of a young man seeking something greater in foreign lands and finally there is the enduring beauty of She Walks in Beauty. It may seem contentious to have an American, Tyrone Power recite Byron’s words, even one of Power’s star standing. However when you think of the dashing swashbuckling, and yes, Byronic image of this Hollywood matinee icon, it feels very right that he should have stepped into Byron’s shoes. Furthermore Power was just as at home as a stage performer, having explored the work of Shaw and Benét and is magnificent in vociferously portraying Byron’s words. - 1. Don Juan (Canto I) 2.
