THE NURSERY ALICE First American Edition 1890 With UK Ads in Rear Very Rare!

Description: Up for sale is a very rare 1st U.S. edition of The Nursery "Alice". For those familiar, this was the first Alice book intended for children just above toddler age, so consequently almost all surviving copies suffer from heavy wear as a result of rough handling from little ones… The first U.S. Edition was printed the same year as the 1st UK Alice Nursery edition, but there are far fewer U.S. copies ever on the market for some reason - my theory being that at the time, Carroll, who closely controlled all publishing of Alice books was far more committed to United Kingdom distribution of Alice books than in the USA. The Pages are off-white instead of white as called for on a 1st US edition with advertisements in the rear for other McMillan books available in the United Kingdom (not the USA?) CONDITION: The book is in solid Good+ condition with wear to the covers as shown in photos. Internally, the book is very nice and clean with a solid binding, no torn pages or writing / drawing inside so typical of this book. All the plates present. The front tissue guard has a crease and tear and there is a former book collector’s bookplate inside the front cover. A nice copy!
