It was later included in The Masterpieces of French Art by Louis Viardot, Published by Gravure Goupil et Cie, Paris, 1882, Gebbie & Co., Philadelphia, 1883. This book plate photogravure and its original tissue overlay are from one of those books. The photos clearly show the vintage condition of both pages. The art itself is in excellent condition and would be gorgeous matted and framed. See photos. Doré was a French Printmaker, born in 1832, whose work contributed to the Romantic movement before he died in 1883. “La Marseillaise” is the national anthem of France. It was written in 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle in Strasbourg after the declaration of war by France against Austria, and was originally titled “Chant de guerre pour l’Armée du Rhin” (“War Song for the Army of the Rhine”).
