Description: The Complete Sherlock Holmes in elegant, durable Heritage Press editions All four of the Sherlock Holmes novels and all 56 short stories published by Heritage Press editions. This set consists of three volumes, all with slipcases. The covers on all three volumes represent the publisher's conception of how the wallpaper in 221b Baker Street looked, adorned with "a patriotic V.R. done in bullet pocks." (From "The Musgrave Ritual"; V.R. stands for "Victoria Regina.") Heritage also commissioned a sculptor to create a cameo portrait of Holmes, which is displayed on the cover of each volume. Volume One: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes; A definitive text corrected and edited by Edgar W. Smith. Introduction by Vincent Starrett. Includes original illustrations by Frederic Dorr Steele, Sidney Paget, and others as they appeared in the Strand Magazine (in England) and Collier's (in the United States) at the time of the original publication. The stories are printed in the precise order in which they were published. Volume One begins with the first Holmes adventure to see print – A Study in Scarlet – followed by The Sign of the Four. After those two novels, come two collections of a dozen short stories each: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, concluding with "The Final Problem" and the apparent death of Holmes at the hands of Professor Moriarity at Reichenbach Falls.Heritage Press 1950. First printing. 764 pages, 60 illustrations. Very good condition. Slip case shows some signs of wear. Volume Two: The Later Adventures. Thirteen more short stories, originally collected as The Return of Sherlock Holmes, and beginning with the memorable "The Adventure of the Empty House." Followed by the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles. Heritage Press 1952. First printing. 458 pages, 40 illustrations. Very good condition. Volume 3: The Final Adventures.
