Description: Up for sale is a portfolio titled "THE ART TREASURES OF AMERICA" India Proofs, Lettered, Section I, Subscription No. 235. Edited by Edward Strahan. Published by George Barrie, Philadelphia. The Art Treasure of America Being the Choicest Works of Art in the Public and Private Collections of North America. There were originally 10 total volumes. Each set had the subscriber's name printed on the title page. This set belonged to Mr. J. Wirt Randall, Esq., Annapolis, MD. (1845-1912). Mr. John Wirt Randall was a well respected member of the Annapolis bar, member of the board of governors, St. John's College, Appointed Register in Bankruptcy for the Fifth Congressional District of Maryland by Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, Attorney at law, Councilor for the city of Annapolis (3 terms), Director and President of Farmers' National Bank of Annapolis, Member of the House of Delegates from Anne Arundel County, and served on the Maryland Senate, Anne Arundel County 1888-90 and 1896-98. Each volume is filled with highly detailed and highly skilled reproductions of art found in private and public collections. Each contains 30-50 pages of wonderfully well written text outlining the collections from some of the wealthiest collectors in North America at the time. Many of these pieces are now scattered and lost to private collectors or the ravages of time. Each volume measures approximately 12" x 17 1/2". These portfolios were not originally bound very well. The boards are mostly cloth covered cardboard. None of the books are bound. In most cases, the artwork is in Good Condition with outer edge wear. There are protective sheets on top of each work that lists what collection the art if from, the name of the piece and the artist. Most of these cover sheets have heavy spotting and browning. NOTE: This sale is for Volume (Section) I ONLY. The boards are in Fair Condition. They have stains, browning, the edges are scuffed and the corners are bumped and fraying. The spine is cracked, tearing and fraying and the hinges are cracked. There is some internal foxing and spotting on the pages, but most of the damage is in the border area. The photographs are very nice and would look great framed! Tears, nicks and chips all along the edges. Foxing and spotting. The text portion, titled "The Corcoran Gallery, Washington" has 48 typed pages. However, some pages are missing because on page 48, the words end in the middle of a sentence and there is no page 49. In this volume, there are 19 full page reproductions. All the pages are loose. There is a sticker inside the front board that reads "Library Of The Corcoran Gallery of Art" - so, this is most likely an ex-library book, however, no other stamps are visible. Please note international shipping charges. Other dings here and there. Please email me with questions and see my store for other great items. Inventory - R-Box 72
