T&P 100 and trailer coach were rubber-tired rail cars built by the Budd Company using the French firm, Michelin's "Micheline" design. In 1931, an agreement between the two companies allowed Budd to use the then-new rubber rail tire technology on its shot-welded, stainless-steel carbodies, allowing Michelin to expand into the American market. Budd built four production rubber-tired trains; one for Reading Railroad, two for the Pennsy, and the train appearing in Andy’s painting, the “Silver Slipper” for the Texas & Pacific. Though this type of rubber-tired car fared much better in Europe, they were all plagued by problems here in the States, chief among them was the tendency to derail on U.S. track systems. By 1935, the “Silver Slipper” had been scrapped. Pennsy's two cars lasted till 1948. But back in ‘32, they were quite a sight. There had never been anything in the US like these revolutionary stainless steel cars. Despite their shortcomings, they ushered in the modern era of streamlined trains.. 550 different Limited Edition railroad art prints by Andy available now at fixed prices.
