Description: Tasai 42mm Japanese bench chisel (oiire nomi) with Mokume Gane finish, which translates to "wood grain metal" in English. This complex process involves the forging and folding of different metal alloys to produce nomi or other objects with distinctive patterns and superior mechanical properties compared to normal steels. This is masterpiece of hand forging by Echigo Sanjo master blacksmiths (shokunin) Akio Tasai (father) and Michio Tasai (son). It is made from a special blue steel so it will hold a sharp edge. The handle is Japanese red oak (akagashi). Note how the incredible mokume finish extends all the way to the ferrule (hakama), unlike some less expensive versions made by other blacksmiths. Hand hammered katsura (striking hoop) and hakama (ferrule). An incredible addition to any tool collection. Thanks for your interest!
