Description: 12ish x 7.5 inches (Tablet) 13ish x 7.5 inches (Tablet + Stand) The Tablet of Shamash is a stele recovered from the ancient Babylonian city of Sippar in southern Iraq in 1881 and is now a major artifact in the British Museum's ancient Middle East collection. It is dated to the reign of King Nabu-apla-iddina ca. 888 – 855 B.C. The upper part of the tablet has a carved panel. Nabu-nadin-shum (a priest) and the goddess Aa lead Nabu-apla-iddina (a king of Babylon, reigned 888 – 855 B.C.) to a shrine. Within the shrine (Ebabbara), the Sun God, wearing a horned headdress, sits on a stool and holds a ringed rod in his right hand. Before him, a solar disc rests on an altar, which is supported by ropes held by attendant deities (which can be seen on the roof of the shrine). The whole shrine sits on what appears to be a heavenly ocean. Above the Sun god, symbols of Sin, Shamash, and Ishtar appear. From the Temple of Shamash at Sippar, Southern Mesopotamia modern-day Iraq. Each artwork from the Ancient Relica Series is created to be visually and tactically exciting.
