Description: Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) wrote his SYMPHONY No. 1 in D major, Hob. I:1, at the beginning of his role as music director for Count Karl Joseph Franz Morzin. Composed in 1757, it opens with a slow building crescendo, an innovative device which reflects the new Classical style. Other features which display later musical developments, such as sonata-allegro form and the minuet and trio, are absent here. Rather than thematic development, sudden texture shifts and a treasure-trove of melodic snippets provided musical interest for some of Haydn's earliest audiences. Instrumentation: 0.2.0.0: 2.0.0.0: Hpchd: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set).
