Description: One packet of more than 50 seedsChoose seed parent from the drop-down menu Raising hybrid Streptocarpus (Cape Primrose) from seed is a great indoor project for gardeners and plant lovers. We are offering seeds from hand-pollinated named cultivars. The pictures show the parent plants. Flowers from 3 to 6 cm across are held atop wire-thin stems rising from loose rosettes of velvet-soft, arching leaves. Colors range from white and yellow through pale rose and lavender to deep violet, burgundy, midnight blue, and rich cerise. Some flowers have sharp, ornate markings; others have boldly colored contrasting centers. Many striking and lovely combinations are possible. These seeds can be shipped safely at any time of year. We have tested seeds stored outdoors for several days at temperatures colder than -20C and they germinated just fine. We are currently packaging seeds collected in fall and winter 2022-23 from plants that bloomed in spring and summer 2022. The flowers were pollinated with other named cultivars, those listed and many others. Pollen parents include regular seed-producing cultivars such as Keigetsu, Gotika, Full Moon, and Dracula's Shadow. We also use pollen from Sylvian cultivars that typically do not produce their own seeds, such as Hebe, Drako, Jasmin, Kahinta, Anna Sui, Exotica, Listy, Lolita, Motsart, Neznyi Angel, Roberto Cavalli, Verson, Zhizel, Zlotko, and several of the Harlequin series (Dawn, Lace, Damsel, Rose, Ruby, Delft, Sapphire). Photos of most these cultivars can be found elsewhere online. Information can also be found on the blog Primrose Fields: Scenes from a Garden in Edmonton, Canada. Plants raised from these seeds will not be identical to either of the parents. Some will resemble one or both of the parents in colour, form, size, and/or markings, and some may not closely resemble either parent. Expect to be surprised and delighted by the variations in colouring, size, form, and patterning. We have posted pictures of some plants we grew from these seeds on the blog (as above). Look in the category "Streptocarpus Propagation." We test our seeds every 3-4 months and add new seeds all the time. Our routine tests produce better than 80% germination within 4 weeks. Seeds begins to sprout within two weeks of sowing, and first flower buds appear 4-6 months later. Display your potted plants outdoors in summer, in a cool, shady spot, or keep them indoors in a window or under lights. A well-tended plant at its peak, usually beginning in early summer, will cascade with blossoms for many weeks, and can go on flowering, at a lesser rate, through autumn and into the darkest days of winter. Streps are easy, rewarding houseplants all year round. We have them sitting in windows on every side of the house, where they flourish in bright, indirect natural light. The seeds are very small and can be tricky to handle, but each packet is sure to contain more than the stated number. We also provide a page of detailed instructions to get you started. Where our photos or text appear in other sellers' listings, they are used without permission. = = = A Note on ShippingOrders are shipped from Canada via standard letter-mail.
