Description: Soviet Badge Commemorating the Buran / Energia Space Shuttle Program, circa 1989 – 2001 issue. The badge is from the Soviet era or immediate post-Soviet years, not a recent issue or a replica. It is quite well-made and large measuring 41 mm in width, 29 mm in height. Made in aluminum with lacquer and “cold” enamels. The inscription on the top is “Energia – Buran” referring to the Energia (“Energy”) rocket and the reusable Buran (“Blizzard”) shuttle orbiter. The inscription at the bottom is “TK - Baikonur” which stands for “Technical Complex – Baikonur” – the special facility where the shuttle and launch vehicle were tested and prepared before being transported to the launch pad. The artwork shows the buildings of the center including the hangar with the Buran. This hangar collapsed during a strong storm in 2002 burring both the shuttle and its carrier. This event effectively ended the Russian space shuttle program which was already comatose at that point due to lack of funding. The Soviet shuttle had made only one unmanned space flight prior to that. Note that the badge does not have a retail price on the back, which is a clear indication that it was intended as a commemorative token to people working on the program, not a souvenir that could be sold to general public. The badge is in EXCELLENT condition, without any damage or noticeable wear. A great and uncommon vintage piece to add to a space memorabilia collection! FREE SHIPPING (USPS 1st cl.
