Description: SHANE Jack Schaefer's first and most famous work, selected as the best novel ever by the Western Writers of America. The book is signed by Schaefer on the first page, with no personalized inscription. Extremely rare thus: Schaefer signed few of his works, and at present I find only two genuine signed copies of Shane for sale online, first editions listing for $12,500 and $15,000. Shane was originally published in 1949. This copy is from the eighth printing of the 1954 illustrated edition, which includes cover art by John McCormack that is far superior to the amateurish cover of the first edition; there are also sixteen McCormack illustration plates inserted through the text. The book is in very good shape. The jacket, which early on was housed in a protective sleeve, shows only minor handling. The book itself has a little soiling to the text, including a stain to the bottom of two pages (photo 6), otherwise excellent. The one other flaw is that the jacket and sleeve were taped into the book; the sleeve was carefully removed, but the tape remains on the jacket flaps and inside the covers (see photos 7 & 8). I'm not sure whether or not this can be removed without damage to the paper. Still a sharp copy of a remarkable collector's item, at a very low price.
