Description: Here's a sad piece of American history which is rarely seen, involving Robert Kennedy who was assassinated in 1968. This 4" x 15" bumper sticker was produced in California in the latter half of 1967 (as some newspaper accounts suggest, copies of which we have but have to look for). It was definitely done before he announced that he was seeking the '68 democrat presidential nomination in mid-March of '68. So, this has a story. RFK was his older brother, John F. Kennedy's, 1960 campaign manager. After that win, he was put in the Administration as Attorney General and continued in that job after JFK was shot in November 1963, for President Johnson. But those two never really got along. So, in 1964, Bobby moved his family to New York state and ran for a U.S. Senate seat from there. Taking office in early 1965, Senator Kennedy made a trip to Canada to climb to the top of a mountain they had named Mt. Kennedy after his bother. We have a pinback produced about avoiding such crazy stuff because people needed RFK for 1972, our item 276463226278. But, more of the story with this item is that, since LBJ had won a huge re-election victory in 1964, the consensus of opinion was that he would be the favorite in 1968 for another term. Which meant that Bobby wouldn't get his chance until 1972. This bumper sticker maker never figured on LBJ's lousy conduct of the Viet Nam war, so much so that, with his opinion polls in the tank and a poor showing in the early democrat primaries, by the end of March 1968, LBJ announced he wouldn't run again. Bobby had seen the writing on the wall and had already declared and began doing well in primaries. But he was shot late on the night he won the June 4 California Primary and died on June 6. All this is what makes a 1972 RFK campaign item like this so sad for some, even beyond the more common, wistful 1968 material. After all, who'd have thought at the time that both Kennedy brothers would be assassinated? RFK material has gained much added interest this year since his eldest son - and namesake - is also running for president over a half-century later.
