Description: Miss Alexander in Birmingham, Alabama had a mysterious palm for many years that endured numerous very low temperatures without damage over the course of it's life. When she passed away in 1976 the palm was preserved by donating it to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. At that time a nursery in South Carolina collected seeds and later sold small seedlings. These seedlings exhibited similar cold hardiness to Sabal minor when larger though they developed a trunk and more closely resembled a Sabal palmetto. The mother palm of these seedlings is a pure second generation offspring of the original palm. It was particularly vigorous and grew from a planted three gallon into an adult tree with 3.50 feet of trunk in only 13 years! Many seedlings from this tree developed bifed leaves in their second year, exceeding normal growth progression for Sabal palmetto. They grow well in many soil types that contain 10% or more clay. Full sun locations, especially into the afternoon, will increase growth. Regular irrigation in the growing season will encourage more rapid growth. Cold hardiness for established larger palms is around -4F. What you are purchasing is an established three gallon palm, similar to the ones in the first two photos. The third photo is the original Sabal Birmingham in the late 1970's. We ship on Mondays and Tuesdays following payment. No international orders please. Thanks for looking!
