William Walton “Bill” Sharman (May 25, 1926 - October 25, 2013) was a baseball player in the Brooklyn Dodgers minor system during the first half of the 1950s, and in 1951 became the only player in Major League Baseball history to be ejected from a game without playing a single minute of any Major League game. Foregoing a baseball career for basketball, Sharman was a second round draft pick of the Washington Capitols in the 1950 NBA Draft. In 1951, he was taken by the Fort Wayne Pistons in the dispersal draft and traded shortly thereafter to the Boston Celtics. In Boston, he joined Hall of Famer Bob Cousy creating one of the most formidable backcourts in NBA history. With Cousy as the setup man and Sharman the shooter, the Celtics won four NBA championships (1957, 1959-1961) with a team packed with Hall of Fame players including Bill Russell, Tom Heinsohn and Andy Phillip. Sharman was named to eight NBA All-Star Games and was named NBA All-Star Game MVP in 1955. He was a four-time All-NBA First Team member and three-time Second Team selection. Bill Sharman retired after 11 seasons as a player in 1961 with 12,665 point, 2,779 total rebounds and 2,101 assists. In 1966, Sharman returned to basketball to coach the ABA’s San Francisco Warriors (1966-1968), the Los Angeles/Utah Stars (1968-1971) and the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers (1971-1976). He led the Utah Stars to the ABA Championship in 1971 and the following season led the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA Championship, thus becoming the second coach in history to with a title in both leagues. He was named ABA Coach of the Year in 1970 and NBA Coach of the Year in 1972. Sharman retired from coaching after 10 years with a record of 466-353 in 819 contests. Bill Sharman was inducted in to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1976 as a player and 2004 as a coach. In 1996, Bill Sharman was also named to the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History list.
