Description: Washington Irving’s famous classic “Rip Van Winkle” was originally published in 1820. This edition by Charles Scribner Sons, which contains some of Arthur Rackham’s best work, was published in 1905 with his illustrations, and has been constantly reprinted. This 1959 edition has been re-set with the complete text and all of the original pictures – 50 colored plates and a color frontispiece. It was the publication of this early American tale that became the turning point in the production of books since – through color-separated printing – it featured the accurate reproduction of color artwork. Unusually, instead of the illustrations being spread throughout the story they have been inserted on glossy paper in three different sections of the book, printed back-to-back. Arthur Rackham (1867 – 1939), is considered one of the pre-eminent illustrators of the Edwardian age (from 1890 through the end of WWI). He was born in London, England and died of cancer in 1939 at his Limpsfield, Surrey home. His first book of illustrations was published in 1893 but it wasn’t until 1896 that his work began showing hints of the whimsical, magical style, later to become his hallmark. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolor, a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. Over the course of his lifetime, he illustrated over 60 books, numerous magazines and achieved international fame and awards. He left a great legacy of work that is still as popular today as it was at the time of publication
