Description: AMERICAN REVOLUTION. Revolutionary War cloth night cap, measuring 8.5 by 7 inches and in fine condition with only light staining and a few small torn holes, worn by Sarah Hawkes (1776-1867) as a baby after her birth in Saugus, Massachusetts on October 13, 1776. Born to Adam (1743-1778) and Hannah (Newhall) Hawkes (1748-1827) who famously fought in Captain David Parker’s Company during the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. While serving under Captain Edward Hammond’s command on the privateer Graybow, he was captured and imprisoned by the British at Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 9, 1778. Hawkes was released during a prisoner exchange, returned home on October 16, contracted yellow fever on October 19, and sadly passed away on October 20 leaving his widow with nine children. REVOLUTIONARY WAR NIGHT CAP WORN BY THE BABY OF LEXINGTON AND CONCORD SOLDIER ADAM HAWKES IN 1776 Accompanied with late 19th century handwritten provenance and early 20th century typed provenance from Hawkes’ great-grandaughter: “This night cap belonged to Sarah Hawkes (Whiting) Puffer, my great grandmother on my father’s side, Amy C. Wheeler” and “‘Night Caps’ Night Cap at top belonged to Sarah (Hawkes) Whiting Puffer. Sarah b. Saugus, Mass. Oct. 13, 1776, dau. of Adam & Hannah (Newhall) Hawkes; d. Feb. 14, 1867 Leominster. Sarah 1st. m. Lemuel Whiting; m. 2nd Jacob Puffer. Sarah & Jacob Puffer are of the silhouettes, owned by H. Wheeler. Sarah gr. gr. Grandmother of Hazeh Wheeler, on my Mother’s Father’s side, Amy M. Carter Wheeler.” ACCOMPANIED WITH LATE 19TH CENTURY HANDWRITTEN PROVENANCE FROM HAWKES’ GREAT-GRANDDAUGHTER Nicely framed to an overall size of 31.5 by 17.5 with another cloth night cap, measuring 16.5 by 8.5 inches and in very fine condition with only light staining, worn by Sarah Hawke’s daughter, Sarah Whiting (1841-1901), as a baby after her birth in Ashby, MA on December 10, 1841. Accompanied with late 19th century handwritten provenance and early 20th century typed provenance from Hawkes’ grandaughter: “This night cap belonged to Sarah Rebecca Whiting (Woods) Carter, my grandmother (father’s side), Amy C. Wheeler” and “Night Cap at bottom belonged to Sarah Rebecca (Whiting) Woods Carter (dau. of Sarah (Hawkes) Whiting Puffer & Lemuel Whiting. Sarah b. Dec. 10, 1841 Ashby, Mass.; d. Nov. 23, 1901 Shirley. Sarah 1st. m. Charles Woods; m. 2nd Samuel Molton Carter. Sarah gr. Grandmother of Hazen Wheeler, on his Mother’s Father’s side, Amy M. Carter Wheeler.”
