This is the highest chart appearance ever for a Reference Recordings title. Joel Fan is a member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble and has appeared with the Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as on the television shows Good Morning America and David Letterman. A native New Yorker (born in 1969), Fan studied at the Julliard School, Harvard University and the Peabody Conservatory. Acclaimed as "superb" (The Boston Globe), "extraordinary" (The Village Voice), and "a versatile and sensitive pianist" (The Washington Post), Joel Fan combines astounding virtuosity with a rare gift for lyricism. World Keys presents a series of brilliantly crafted piano works that traverse different world musics – from Turkish Aksak rhythms and Arabian Maqam to Peking Opera of China – and juxtaposes them with works in the Western piano canon. Just as the piano sound world of Prokofiev, Schumann and Liszt may evoke the instruments of the modern orchestra, the music from foreign lands calls forth instruments such as the Chinese pipa and Persian santour. This singular program is sure to stretch the ears. "...an entertaining presentation that invites thoughts about music's underlying relationships and shows this pianist as an expressive and intelligent artist, as well as a sophisticated citizen of the world. Reference's sound is clean and transparent, with a resonant luster that is highly effective in the quiet pieces." - All Music Guide - (4 1/2 performance / 4 1/2 sound - out of 5) REFERENCE RECORDINGS is a well known audiophile label. Indeed "Professor Keith O. Johnson" has been associated with many cutting edge recording examples / techniques not only on the software side of the business, but in the hardware side as well - the highly known and respected "Spectral" brand name comes to mind immediately. Their music software (both CD and LP) competes with the likes of other grand audiophile labels such as; MFSL, Sheffield Lab, Wilson Audio, Opus 3, Mark Levinson, Proprius, etc.. Many of the company's issues have been associated with sonic spectaculars, more specifically, with The Absolute Sound (TAS) magazine, or as it's known in audiophile circles "HP's Super Disc List" (Harry Pearson) as is this title - "The Absolute Sound Super Disc List"! If you haven't done so already, give a few of the Reference Recording titles a spin, you won't be sorry! This listing is for a very rare audiophile CD title - a FACTORY SEALED CD PRESSED and ISSUED by Reference Recordings.
