THIS MONTH'S COVER: From the earliest days of our civilization, artists have tound in the female form a challenge and an inspira- tion. Many of them have spent a lifetime trying to record it--in stone, in bronze, in clay and in paint. One of the greatest of these--and one of the most successful--was Michel Clodion (1783-1814), whose masterpiece, "A Satyr and Two Graces" (sometimes called "The Offering to the God of the Garden") is shown on our cover. Unlike most sculptors, Glodion worked almost entirely in terra cotta. hence, each of his works is unique, and a genuine Glodion (there are, alas, many imitations) is worth at least $10,000; indeed, at a recent sale in Paris one of them fetched the remarkable price of $21,000. Glodion's subjects varied little: nymphs pursued by satyrs, young girls reclining on couches, toying with grapes or goblets of wine, playing langorously with animals or children. Together they present a particular vision of womankind: of woman in the eternal springtime of youth, soft, rounded, chaste--forever amorous and forever pure. In similar ways, all the great artists have created their own personal image of woman. Recently, John Berger, the famous British art critic, paid a visit to the Louvre and chose four portraits of women to illustrate this theme. The reflections which these paintings provoked are recorded in "The Four Fair women of Paris," which we publish on Page 60. NEWS FROM PARIS: Margaret Biddle's newsletter: The Messina Conference.
