Description: STK: #SWORD-GAPBrought to you by CAMARILLO TRADERS specialists in new, used & antique arms, collectible militaria and rustic ephemera RARE Pre-WWI 1906 Experimental M1905/M1906 Ames A.S. Co. Sword & Officer's Pigskin Leather Scabbard Manufacturer: Ames Manufacturing Co., A.S. Co. Model: M1905/M1906 Blade Length: 30" Serial #: N/A TEXT GOES HERETEXT GOES HERE --> Offered here is a Pre-WWI era US experimental M1905/06 Officer saber sword and pigskin leather scabbard. This sword was developed as a result of President Roosevelt asking to upgrade designs on military items like rifles, bayonets and swords. This sword was based on the M1902 Officer's saber but had a bird's head grip. Approximately 1,300 swords were manufactured by Ames and Springfield Armory. They were tested by cavalry, infantry and artillery regiments. A few were tested by Engineer, Signal Corps and Staff units. Testing occurred between 1906 and 1909. The interest died in early 1910. The scabbard is made of wood and covered with cow leather for enlisted men and pigskin for officers. There were three lengths produced - 27", 30" and 32". This one is a 30" sword. Some came with nickel-plated steel scabbards. Overall, this sword is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The pommel and band knuckle-bow are securely fastened to the hilt. The pommel is in the shape of a birds' head and is checkered. The checkering is mostly distinct with some light scattered wear. They have scattered light erosion, oxidation and scrapes. The remaining finish has turned darker patina color. The grip is made of shark skin and has some scattered scrapes, scratches and discoloration. However, there are no rips or tears. The skin is wrapped with brass intertwined wire. It is tightly bound with no fraying material. Some of the brass has started to turn a darker patina color. The blade has a light bend approximately the last 12" of the blade towards the tip. The spine, sides and fullers have light scrapes and scratches. There are a couple very small areas of light oxidation, but almost not worth mentioning. There are a few very light nicks and dings on the blade's cutting edge, almost not worth mentioning. It appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The nickel blade finish is partially intact and the metal areas that have worn off have started to turn a darker patina color. The left ricasso is marked "U.S.", the right ricasso is marked "A.S. Co. / 1906" with a flaming bomb in between them. There are no other visible markings. The scabbard is in Poor - Fair condition, considering its age and history. The suspension rings are securely fastened to the body, they swivel and rotates freely. However, the lower one has a wiggle but mostly stays in place. Most of the finish has oxidized. We recommend NOT using these to preserve the scabbard as much as possible. The throat is securely attached to the body. The body is made of wood and it appears to have been wrapped in pigskin leather (For Officers). We think it is pig skin due to the remaining pore texture. The skin cover is dried out, has cracks, rips and is missing pieces. The stitching is sewn tightly except for the tip. The stitching at the tip has come undone about 2.25", some of the leather is missing and the wood is cracked and missing a small piece. Overall, the scabbard is quite functional and securely holds the sword. The sword slides in and out correctly and easily. There are no visible markings on the scabbard. Normally the manufacturer markings are on the tip, but that area has worn down as stated above. This sword and scabbard will be a great addition to your US experimental weapons collection, or a sword collection in general.
