Description: Wonderful example of French artistic satire and humor in a rarely available original copy in the United States. This was a special edition insert poster from 1902 Le Rire titled LE CAKE-WALK OFFICIEL by artisan Abel Faivre.This wonderful depiction characterizes a wide swath of peoples, politics and society from the era. This period, oft reffered to as "Belle Epoque" (from the end of the 19th Century through the beginning of the 20th Century) was a social enlightenment as ordinary people found themselves with a bit more wealth and time, and seeked out enrichment and experiences in culture. Le Rire was the most successful of the Social Humeresqqe publications, lasting from its' creation in 1894 to its closure in 1971. The name "Le Rire" itself means "To Laugh", and it certainly fullfilled its' namesake. The overall size of this poster is 36.5" x 19". The fine original crease lines designate a basic page size of 9" x 12" with an added 7" vertical flap fold to match the magazine size as an insert or attachment. in as much, it would have incorporated 4 full pages each with the added 7" folded length.. There is minor brown toning on the outer edges and a little browning on the crease lines. The overall paper condition and printing color is very nice and the piece displays exceptionally well. On the far right fold line there is a duplicate paper flaw at what would be an overlapping fold corner. This results in one tear approx. 1/2" and another puncture impression of the same size. The piece is quite mesmorizing as you can regale in 16 or so different satirical depictions all overlapping in the appearance of a political gala. A true piece of history and art blended in fine early 20th century French humor. This poster insert is currently sealed behind plastic and layed over stiff backer board. I would intend to ship domestically as such with additional reinforcement.
