Description: We are delighted to offer this early to mid 20th century carved wood anthropomorphic “Ngi" Lemur figure. Lemurs are primates found only on the African island of Madagascar and some tiny neighboring islands. Because of its geographic isolation, Madagascar is home to many amazing animals found nowhere else on Earth. This piece is rare and unusual, and very realistic with a zoomorphic facial expression, as well as the inventiveness of their round, simple forms. Both of these aspects are striking in that the artist has captured with great precision the animal's posture, indicating the work of a very talented carver. While the wood has endured time and use worn splits, this piece shows superb patina. The overall condition is good. Called Ngi by the Bulu *Boulou occupy the borders region between Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. They are part of the Fang group with whom they share cultural similarities. From 1880-1910 the Bulu, like the Fang practiced an ngi ritual against sorcery, in particular against poisonings. The "ngi" is the gorilla, a fearful animal, with which the candidate identifies after he has been accepted into the association. We appreciate your careful review of the photos as they tell so much more than we can articulate; and ask that you zoom in for a closer look at any and all condition issues. We certainly welcome questions and encourage you to ask before reaching a buying decision. Fixed rate or free shipping applies to US buyers only.
