Description: Eight-going-on-nine-year-old Maggie Rose, who was born on the night before Christmas and named after a real live princess, is one of "those Bunkers," a lazy and shiftless family who live in a dilapidated shack on the wrong side of the Point, a resort spot near Bangor, Maine, and are known to one and all as the laziest, laughingest, singingest family for miles around. Tim and Liz Bunker and their brood of seven children are without an ambition in the world and prefer to lean generously on the charity of their neighbors rather than go out and work. Only Maggie Rose ever wishes for something a little better; most especially, she wishes that just for once there was enough money for "those Bunkers" to have a wonderful birthday Christmas celebration all of their own. In spite of their faults "those Bunkers" have a fine feeling for the important things in life and they all recognize Maggie Rose as something special, someone who might have come out of the top bureau drawer. So when tragedy threatens Maggie Rose, "those Bunkers" are finally jolted out of their kitchen chairs, and in an unprecedented move they rally together and determinedly set about making Maggie Rose's dream come true. This is an incredibly rare book as it was made specifically for libraries. It is a first edition 1952 but not made for the mass market. Two telltale signs are.... 1) the illustration of Maggie Rose for my book is on the hard cover. Mass market books have a dust jacket cover with the illustration. The underlying book cover is blank. 2) On my book's spine the title of the book is in a small font that is written to be read when the book is standing up, like it would be if on a shelf, in a library. The mass market copy of this book has a title on the spine that is properly read when the book is laying flat on a surface, not standing up. Obviously the dust jacket cover has the title aligned to be read when the book is standing up. The book is obviously ex-libris so about a dozen pages have stamps that were blacked out, etc. (see photos). Covers are in great shape with only light shelf wear on the corners. Binding is tight. Some pages' edges have a little defect at the top and a little stain on the bottom edges (see photos). One page has a torn corner (see photo), a couple of other pages have a smudge here or there. All in all maybe 15-20 of the 145 pages have a little blemish. Pricing reflects this.
