Description: This is possibly the coolest tree on the planet. A native of the southern tropical regions of Africa, the Sausage Tree grows up to an average 60 feet in height, and drops long hanging vines that produce deep red pollinator-loving flowers, then a strange, heavy fruit that can weigh up to about 20 lbs. If you´re going to grow this tree, remember to place it in an area where dropping fruit can´t damage anything underneath. You should be able to see production in about 6 - 8 years in hardiness zones 9 - 11; may need protection from cold in cooler winter climates.The raw fruit is poisonous to humans, but has medicinal and skin care qualities, and is used to make a traditional fermented beverage.
