Description: Circa late 1800's, this rare small or mini-rosary is called the Chaplet of the Holy Face of Jesus. This tiny rosary is said to be dedicated to honor the five senses, namely the senses of TOUCH, HEARING, SIGHT, SMELL and TASTE by which the Lord suffered in his Holy Face. The chaplet was started by Sister Marie de Saint Pierre, a Carmelite nun from Tours, France. From 1843-47, Sister Marie (born 1816-died 1848) said that she experienced 'interior visions' of Christ where he desired devotion to his Holy Face in reparation to blasphemy against his Holy Name and also for profanation (or desecration) of the Holy Day of the Lord. She also wrote a prayer against blasphemy against the name of the Lord called the 'Golden Arrow Holy Face Devotion (or Prayer)'. This prayer is now more commonly known as 'Act of Reparation to Jesus Christ'. Sister Marie unfortunately died the following year in 1848 at the age of 31. At Tours, there was also a man called Leo Dupont who was the son of a wealthy French sugar landowner and a creole in Martinique. A religious man and a philanthropist who donated most of his wealth to the Carmelite Order in Tours and to other charitable institutions, he was known as the 'Holy Man of Tour's. Upon hearing about Sister Marie's vision, Dupont started the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus by continuously burning a vigil lamp before a picture of the Holy Face based on the image of Christ in Veronica's veil. In 1851, he founded the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face in Tours. His promotion and dedication to this devotion lasted for 30 years! The promotion of (Venerable) Dupont was instrumental in keeping alive this devotion. When Dupont died in 1876, his house was purchased by the Archdiocese of Tours and turned into the Oratory of the Holy Face. The oratory was administered by an order of priests called the Priests of the Holy Face. In 1885, Pope Leo XIII approved the Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. In 1889, St Therese of Liseux received her religious habit in the Carmelite Order. She was introduced to this devotion by her blood nun sister, Pauline or Sister Agnes of Jesus in the same Carmelite Order. St Therese would later be called the 'St Therese of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face'. This item is rare as it is hard to find an antique form of this chaplet. The chaplet of the Holy Face of Jesus (The Teresian Way) is slightly different by having the first 3 small beads right after the Cross; then the first 2 big beads precedes the 5 groups of six beads. (Please see images of this chaplet online for verification). This chaplet is composed of 39 beads: 33 small beads and 6 big beads. The first 3 small beads represent the public life of Jesus. The other 30 small beads represents the private life of Jesus. Each group of six small beads honours the five senses on the Holy Face of Jesus. The entire chaplet is made of warm brown wood beads and all links are made of steel. The bigger beads are protected by florette cappings which is possibly also made of steel. There are many websites online that explains about this chaplet and how to pray this chaplet. I have quoted here one of the comments from the illuminadomine.com: There are many “Rosaries” or “Chaplets” in addition to the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Little Chaplet of the Holy Face is a gem, which is not only very short, but also very powerful. The words of the Chaplet derive from Psalm 67 (68 in some Bibles). St. Athanasius relates that the devils, on being asked what verse in the whole Scripture they feared most, they replied, ‘That Psalm which begins: “Arise, O Lord, and let Thy enemies be scattered. Let those that hate Him flee before His Face!’ Then they are compelled to take flight.” For your consideration is this rare antique chaplet of the Holy Face of Jesus. This rosary has signs of slight corrosion in the steel parts but is actually in very good condition for its age and use. If you want this rosary to be further cleaned, kindly let me know. I have made an educated guess on the age of this rosary based on the historical accounts presented in this description and on the materials used for this rosary.
