This watercolor shows the 9-year-old Prince Victor Odescalchi playing with models of warships in park of his mother's estate Hirtenberg near resort Baden by Vienna. It was found in one of the two albums of his mother, Princess Henriette Odescalchi. Prince Victor Odescalchi made a military career and served in the Austrian dragoons (by the time of his retirement, he was in rank of a major). He was similarly a talented amateur artist. Princess Henriette Odescalchi, nee Countess Zichy-Ferraris was born on February 10, 1800 as a daughter of Count Ferenc Franz Zichy-Ferraris de Zich et Vásonkeö (see our additional image) and Marie Wilhelmine von Ferraris. She was the older sister of 5 years her junior Countess Melanie Zichy-Ferraris, the 3rd wife of Austrian Chancellor Prince Metternich. She was born at her parents' residence Castle Karlburg (now Rusovsky Kastiel in the suburb of Bratislava, Slovakia; see our additional image). In 1831, Henriette married 22 years her senior aristocrat of Italian descent, Prince Innocenzo Vincenz Odescalchi (see our additional image). The latter died on September 24, 1833, i.e. 19 days after this watercolor (it is dated September 7) was painted and 9 weeks after the birth of his son. Widowed and with child, Princess Henriette first lived in Karlburg; then, from 1842 - in her summer residence, Castle Hinterberg near the resort Baden by Vienna (see our additional image; now, it is one of Austrian prisons) and in her winter quartier in Vienna. She was one of the most prominent ladies of the Austrian high society, the bearer of the ladies Star Cross Order, head of the "Gesellschaft adeliger Frauen zur Beförderung des Guten und Nützlichen" (English: Noblewomen's Society for Encouragement of the Virtues and Principals"). She died on December 12, 1852. Provenance: 1) Princess Henriette Odescalchi (1800-1852) 2) Prince Victor Odescalchi (1833-1880) 3) Victor's widow, Princess Johanna Odescalchi, nee Countess d'Orsay (1846-1937) 4) Prince Ladislaus Odescalchi (b.1846-?) 5) Vienna antique trade Our last image shows the cover of a recently published book: "Kastiel' v Rusovciach vo svetle vytvarnych diel 19. storocia" by Katarina Benova (Bratislava, Slovakia).
