Description: This nice looking lady was made in Alabama during the WPA program started by President Rosevelt during the Great Depression. All states had a different doll. Alabama had these 10” black dolls doing everyday activities. The person was sent the pattern and materials, they made them, and were paid for them by the government. The details are great. This lady has a blue print dress with a white apron, a red hankie in her pocket. She has a navy blue print blouse with a brown jacket over it. She has a blue handkerchief tied around her head with a large white bundle of washing on her left arm. She is Carrying a washing stick (for beating clothes) She has a small amount of white hair showing under her head wrap. She has handmade shoes, pants lets and petticoat. Her face is hand sewn. She’s adorable. I’m 82 and having to downsize my wonderful collections. Thanks for looking. If you want more info on these dolls, go to Stonegate Antiques.net and then Alabama Folk Art Dolls. They have several pages of info, dolls and prices.
