Description: Three Pre-WWI German Documents of Immigrant Wilhelm Branding of the Grand Duchy Oldenburg This is the original 4-¼ x 6-¾ inch 24-page Dienstbuch or “Employment Book” issued by Grossherzogtum Oldenburg (Grand Duchy of Oldenburg which existed from 1815 to the end of World War I) to Wilhelm Gerhard Branding on 1 May 1912. Wilhelm Branding was born 4 August 1897 at Boitwarden (Kreis Brake) and entries on page 8 and 9 show that the 15 year old started a job as a farmhand on 1 May 1912 at Esenshamm (a very small town south of Wilhelmshaven and Bremerhaven) and worked there for two years. The German Dienstbuch is accompanied by a Quittungskarte or insurance card that was issued to Branding on 4 April 1914 in Alt Butjadingen, a small incorporated hamlet in between the cities of Wilhelmshaven and Bremerhaven. The cardstock health insurance card has three 5,20 Marks purple contribution stamps. With the two official German documents we found a 3 x 5 inch card with the name of a US Immigrant Inspector at Long Wharf Boston, Mass. written on it. On the reverse side it has what appears to be the home address of US Immigrant Inspector William H. Nitz. We suspect Wilhelm Branding left Germany and emigrated via Boston to the USA before the start of World War I in 1914. Our photos show the actual pre-WWI German documents offered for sale.
