For those of you just getting into the hobby, or older Pokemon, let’s have a quick class because mislabeled (and thus sold) 1st edition and Shadowless Pokemon cards are all over eBay. I see them daily. It’s worth getting into: Base Set. What is it? The first era and set of Pokemon cards to arrive in America. How can you tell it’s Base Set? Base set doesn’t have a set icon under the lower right corner of the Pokemon picture box on the face of the card. How do I know if it’s 1st Edition? It will have the first edition icon (a “1” in a black circle which says “edition” over the top of it) under the lower left corner of the Pokemon picture box on the face of the card. Is there another way? Yes. 1st edition will have the year “99” listed in the copyright sentence on the face of the card at the bottom and then repeat the full year “1999” in that same sentence at the end. Later versions omit the first “99” and/or change the second bit to “1999-2000.” Okay, what about Shadowless, what’s that? Shadowless can mean two things. It can mean the second printing of the base set. All the second printing cards are shadowless but none have that 1st edition icon on them. But… it can also mean a valuable card from 1st edition as there were a few printed and shipped. I hope that helps. It’s also worth noting EVERY graded 1st edition card will say 1st Edition on the grade tag. I see lots of cards that are older cards, nice cards, graded cards, listed as 1st edition when they are clearly not. On a graded card, trust the tag, not the eBay title. This card is all of it: Base set! First Edition!! Shadowless!!!
