In habitat, plants occur in the partial shade of shrubs or trees, which often help support the cacti allowing them to obtain lengths of 5 to 10 ft or more with numerous dark green or purplish brown stick-like arms branching from a single stem. Mature plants form large subterranean tubers that can be 12 inches in diameter, possibly the largest of all cacti. The fragrant, 2-3 inch wide, showy flowers last only one night, withering shortly after sunrise the following morning. With sufficient heat, light, moisture, and soil, the first cotyledons typically emerge one to two weeks after sowing. In habitat, seedlings sprout in conjunction with the summer monsoon rains.
