The first Packard vehicles were manufactured in 1899, and production in Detroit continued until 1956, when the company built its last concept car, the Packard Predictor. Before World War II, Packard was considered the premier luxury car brand in the United States and also produced aircraft engines for the Allied war effort. Owning a Packard was a mark of prestige, and many surviving models are now featured in museums, car shows, and private collections. Early Packards were equipped with single-cylinder engines until 1903, when the company introduced its first 4-cylinder model, the Model K. The first six-cylinder engine, the Series 1-48 Six, debuted in 1912. From 1915 to 1923, Packard produced the "Twin Six" series, featuring 12-cylinder engines. The Packard Eight was launched in 1930, followed by the V8 engine in 1955. Throughout its history, Packard engines were flatheads until the final years of production. The company introduced several automotive innovations, including the modern steering wheel, air-conditioning in passenger cars, and one of the earliest production 12-cylinder engines, adapted from the Liberty L-12 aircraft engine used during World War I. In 1953, Packard acquired Studebaker, forming the Studebaker-Packard Corporation based in South Bend, Indiana. The 1957 and 1958 Packard models were essentially badge-engineered Studebakers, built in South Bend. Item ordered may not be exact piece shown. All original and authentic.
