Description: Offering a lot of (3) Antique Hay Saws/ Hay Knives with cast iron blades and two handles each. Based on the style and age of these saws, they probably date from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. The top saw has a D-style handle, and traces of it's original orange paint, and a unique curvature to the handle. The one handle on the middle saw is in only fair shape. They all measure around 36” long. All three are in good shape, and have a rusty patina and look. There are plenty of pictures for you to see the exact condition of all three. I have a few other lots of Hay Saws in my listings, if interested. Below is some information I found on the distinction between Hay Saws and hay Knives. All three for one price, and being sold below market. Fast shipping. Thanks for looking! Hay saws and hay knives: First off, these tools are not used for harvesting! They were used inside the barn itself. 1. Hay saws (or also named hay knife): Always mislabeled in antique stores as an "ice saw", the hay saw was used in the days before perfect hay bales. Back then, hay was loosely stacked in barns. After months of compacting, hay became tight and required a cutting tool to section out pieces for animal usage. If you notice, some still have vestiges of orange paint, for tools are easily lost in hay piles. Also note the way the blacksmith either bended a piece upward ninety degrees for the top handle, or hammer welded on a separate piece altogether. 2. Hay knife: These are just more of a one blade tool and use a rocking motion more than a sawing action. They too may also show signs of faded orange paint. All of these are made of a single iron piece except the one in the close up picture where you can see rivets connecting the blade to the handle stem. Because these are generally handmade tools, I've yet to see two that are exactly alike.
