Description: This is an original November 1981 issue of Playboy Magazine (subscription edition), and it's part of an extended collection of magazines we've acquired from longtime collectors. The general condition of individual issues in this extended trove ranges from Superb (the CGC equivalent of a 9 or 10) to "reader" (a CGC 3 or 4). We are listing the issues individually, so we are able to make issue-specific notes regarding condition and content below. Please note that combined product amounts over $35 on a single order from our store get a shipping rebate. The cover of the November 1981 issue is graced by model Vikki LaMotta in her only appearance on cover. LaMotta was the divorced second wife of boxer Jake LaMotta, and both were enjoying substantially more than 15 minutes of fame due to the release of Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull" the year before. Robert DeNiro won his second Oscar for portraying Jake LaMotta, and Cathy Moriarty was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for playing Vikki. Hugh Hefner showed a particular interest in helping Vikki LaMotta promote herself as a model because she did not (at the time) fit the visual stereotype of a 51-year-old female, and Hefner was eager to disrupt any stereotypes that the Playboy brand was solely focused on youth. LaMotta's cover, of course, teases her own pictorial inside. The other pictorial this issue is a two-page excerpt of photographs from the newly published book "New York Nude", though there's also the annual photo-rich round-up of "Sex in Cinema". The sole fiction contribution comes from Ed McBain. Other content includes the usual cartoons and humor, as well as an interesting article by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Halberstam on the evolution of pro basketball from a sport to a product. The centerfold is Shannon Tweed, who would go on to become the Playmate of the Year and Hugh Hefner's romantic partner for a little over a year. She would also parlay this into a decades-long acting career and eventually marry Kiss bassist Gene Simmons. The interview is with journalist Oriana Fallaci, who was renowned for gaining access to — and interviews with — some of the most influential and significant people in the world at the time, including Chinese Premier Deng Xiaoping, the Ayatollah Khomeini, and Pope Benedict XVI. The condition of this issue is, in our opinion, an outright 8 with pretensions of being a 9. Really, the only reason we don't upgrade it further is a flattened dog-ear in the upper right front corner, and a light-but-noticeable amount of ink transfer on both covers from the issues this was stored against for literally decades. Those aside, you'd be hard pressed to call the wear/handling evident on this magazine anything other than "light to negligible" — it's just virtually pristine from that standpoint. All pages are present (including the centerfold), the binding staples are secure with no tearing around them, and there are no other dog-ears, creases or folds of note. This issue still even has its original reader-reply cards, so again — it's nearly pristine. We feel this specimen would be a solid addition to any classic collection, and finding one in significantly better condition would be a difficult proposition. All our issues are shipped in protective polybag sleeves.
