Description: Original 1865 antique map: Johnson's Turkey in Asia, Persia, Arabia &c., with decorative fretwork border. The image area measures 31 x 41 cm [12¼" x 16¼"], and longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington. There is wonderful detail throughout, and the map shows caravan routes, cities, towns, and natural features, with topography drawn in relief. The coverage area extends from the Bosphorus to the Indus River, and among the named places and features are Constantinople, Kandahar, Mocha, Mecca, Gulf of Aden, Nile River, Red Sea, Tehran, Azerbaijan, Oman, Medina, Armenia, Damascus, Gaza, Persian Gulf, Adana, Beirut, Sana, Shiraz, the Arabian Sea, Sharjahs Tower, Dibbah (Dubai), Abothubbee (Abu Dhabi), and Ras al Khyme in the UAE region. Also Bahrein, Ras Aufir, Zabarah, El Katif, Dua, the Great Pearl Bank, Goodwin's Island, and Dahnyi Island. The map was published shortly before the Al-Hasa Expedition of 1871, an Ottoman military campaign that successfully brought the Al-Hasa region of eastern Arabia under Ottoman control, effectively expanding the empire's influence under the leadership of Medhat Pasha, the governor of Baghdad at the time, marking a significant extension of Ottoman dominion into the Arabian Peninsula. There are three engraved vignettes: Muscat, Trebisond, and the Castle and Port of Smyrna. Condition: This map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with no rips, tears, or writing.
